Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the Malaysian government is considering legal action against Bloomberg following its controversial report alleging his interference in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigations. The report claimed that Anwar directed MACC’s chief to focus investigations on political opponents while shielding certain allies, accusations that Anwar strongly denies.
During a parliamentary session on October 15, 2024, Anwar described Bloomberg’s claims as “dangerous and slanderous.” He emphasized that the allegations misrepresent his commitment to combating corruption and tarnish his reputation. Anwar clarified that he had only issued general instructions to enforcement agencies like the MACC and Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to act decisively against corruption, without targeting specific individuals or cases.
The controversy escalated when police summoned Bloomberg representatives on October 1, 8, and 11 for investigation. Anwar pointed out that this was not the first time Bloomberg had published damaging claims. Earlier reports falsely suggested government approval for a casino project in Johor, which both Anwar and key business figures denied.
Anwar reiterated that the legal course of action will be determined by the Attorney General’s Chambers after the police conclude their investigation. This move reflects his government’s broader agenda to enforce accountability without prejudice, even as the opposition scrutinizes his leadership over these allegations.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions, with some seeing Anwar’s firm response as necessary to protect Malaysia’s reputation, while others caution that any legal confrontation with international media could attract further scrutiny
